Dr. Kern Beauty Skin Light Therapy The BeautySkin lamp has six 15 watt fluorescent lamps three blue and three red lamps. BeautySkin is based on the positive effect that light of certain wavelengths has on human skin. Blue light penetrates the skin to the bacteria (proprionibacterium acne) which causes pimples and blackheads. The blue light has an antibacterial effect and prevents the further development of pimples and blackheads. The red light soothes skin inflammations and relaxes and stimulates the skin in a positive way. The combination and the simultaneous application of both color types of light create the special effect of BeautySkin and the BeautySkin works without UV radiation. Those of us with mild to moderate acne can benefit from the BeautySkin Lamp. The unit provides for the cosmetic treatment of mild to moderate acne. BLUE LIGHT (415nm) It has long been known that sunlight (UV) can improve acne, although some of the effect is due to superficial camouflage. However, because of photo ageing and medical side effects, Generally UV radiation is not recommended as a safe treatment for acne. More recently, a peak wavelength of 415nm, which is outside the UV range, has been found to be effective at treating acne (1). It is known that Propionibacterium acnes (P. acne) produce porphyrins during their normal life cycle (2). Porphyrins absorb light energy at the near UV and visible blue light spectrum. The irradiation of P. acnes with blue visible light (415nm) leads to photoexcitation of bacterial porphyrins, singlet oxygen production and eventually bacterial destruction (3). RED LIGHT (660nm) It has been found that exposure to 660nm low-level wavelengths release cytokines. Cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation and the production of growth factors, thus influencing the inflammatory process, healing and ultimately wound repair (4, 5, 6, 7,) and has been found to significantly improve postoperative open wounds. red/blue light treatment In the first study of its kind, conducted at Hammersmith Hospital, Dr Chu et al evaluated the use of a mixed blue and red light (peaks at 415nm and 660nm) in the treatment of acne vulgaris. 107 subjects were randomized into four treatment groups. 1. Blue light. 2. Cool white light (placebo) 3. 5% benzoyl peroxide 4. Mixed blue and red light. Treatment consisted of 15-minute irradiation in front of a portable light unit each day. (With the exact, special spec, tubes utilized by BeautySkin). The red/blue mix had significantly better results than the other treatment groups. Improvements were clearly noticeable after only 4 weeks. After 12 weeks, the blue/red treatment achieved a mean improvement of 76% in inflammatory lesions and a mean improvement in comedones of 58%, which exceeded any of the other treatments.

Why light therapy to treat acne?

Blue light therapy acne treatment has recently been approved by the FDA to treat mild to moderate acne. The development of acne blue light therapy has had significant benefits for those who have not responded well to other of methods of treating common acne.

Skin oil accumulates in blocked hair
follicle pores, which become infected.

Common acne, or acne vulgaris, is caused when oil produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin is trapped in pores. The P. acnes bacteria thrive in this trapped oil, and the pore then becomes inflamed and turns into a pimple. A pimple may then develop into a whitehead or blackhead.

Only recently has blue light therapy acne treatment become available for use on a wide basis by dermatologists and others. The acne blue light therapy works by killing the P. acnes bacteria. The light may either be used alone or in conjunction with a topical treatment. The acne blue light treatment has been shown to be effective in treating active acne lesions as well as other sebaceous glands that are not actively producing acne lesions.

The red light is anti-inflammatory and improves healing and increases the rate of production of collagen (giving a handy gentle facelift/antiwrinkling effect that lasts as long as you keep treating). Skin tone ends up better than normal on this treatment, a nice side-effect. It also helps heal up red marks; >10% or more faster.

As with any medical condition, preventing the condition before it occurs is preferable to treating it with blue light therapy acne treatment after it has occurred. There are a number of factors which contribute to acne, only some of which are preventable or avoidable.

A major factor in causing or aggravating acne is the use of harsh cleansers, astringents, or exfoliants. People seeking to avoid acne often mistakenly believe that treating their skin with these products will eliminate the underlying causes of their acne, while instead they may be over drying their skin, causing irritation and ultimately more acne breakouts. Skin cleansers should be mild, and need to be used gently. Also important is not to use them too often.

Cosmetics are another factor which can cause or aggravate acne. Cosmetics or other skin products, which are overly oily or greasy, can clog the pores in the skin, leading to acne. A person who is prone to acne should ensure that the product he or she uses is described as noncomedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores.

Factors such as diet and stress can also contribute to acne breakouts, although the degree to which they are directly related has not been proven.

There are advantages and disadvantages to using acne blue light therapy.

Blue light therapy acne treatment is currently being used successfully to prevent and even reverse mild to moderate cases of acne vulgaris. Acne blue light therapy treatments generally are given once a week for four to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the acne and how well the patient responds. A topical cream may be used in addition to the acne blue light treatments to help reduce lesions, pustules, and papules.

One of the main benefits of blue light therapy acne treatment is the minimal incidence of side effects. Acne blue light therapy is very gentle and surrounding tissues are not harmed, unlike other treatments previously employed.

A dermatologist or other medical professional may provide blue light therapy acne treatment, and there are a number of companies from which interested consumers can directly purchase acne blue light therapy products.

The main disadvantage is that blue light therapy acne treatment is new and in some respects unproven. Many people in the medical field believe that use of light therapy ages the skin, and leaves it more susceptible skin cancers. Unfortunately since it is new, the long-term effects are unknown.

Since the long-term consequences may be severe, we suggest you try a product that is not dangerous and that has no side effects.
